Driving From Jackson Hole To Yellowstone

The drive from Jackson to Yellowstone is one of the best ways to experience the wild west...without leaving your car! As locals, we’ve mapped the best route to take when driving from Jackson to Yellowstone, and where to stop during your trip.


The route you take is up to you (there are several beautiful, winding mountain routes to choose from) and the views along each are worthy of a stop (or three!).

South Entrance of Yellowstone

Distance: 57.3 miles

Drive Time: 1 hour, 15 minutes

Benefits of this route: The most direct route from Jackson to Yellowstone is via the South Entrance. This Yellowstone route gives visitors easy access to view both Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone’s beauty in a day’s visit. This route is the quickest way into the park to afford you the most time taking in all the sights.

  • The scenic John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway (lots of places to pull off to snap photos like Oxbow Bend or Willow Flats Overlook)
  • Jackson Lake Overlook
  • Colter Bay Village

via Highway 22, Moose-Wilson Road & Teton Park Road

Places to stop along this route: 

  • Teton Village
  • Overlooks & marsh areas along Moose-Wilson Road - they’re prime spots to catch a glimpse of a moose
  • Jenny Lake
  • Jackson Lake

What To See In Yellowstone Near The South Entrance: 

  • Lewis Falls
  • The Continental Divide
  • Grant Village
  • Yellowstone Lake

South Entrance To The West Entrance

Distance: 68 miles

Drive Time: 1 hour, 37 minutes

Driving from the South Entrance of Yellowstone to the West Entrance will take you past some of the most iconic spots in the park; Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic Spring & more. Check out the town of West Yellowstone just outside the West Entrance, with shops and fun eateries. This route allows you to easily access the upper loop sightseeing spots.

  • Fountain Paint Pots Trail
  • Firehole River Swimming Area

South Entrance To The East Entrance

Distance: 55.2 miles

Drive Time: 1 hour, 16 minutes

Benefits of this route: Driving from the South Entrance to Yellowstone’s East Entrance will also allow you to view beautiful open areas of the park, and will lead you past the immense Yellowstone lake. You’ll also pass many fantastic hiking trails along the way, so be sure to bring your hiking boots!

  • West Thumb Geyser Basin Trail

The Entire Grand Loop Road

Distance: 142 miles

Drive Time: 4 - 7 hours

Benefits of this route: While the Grand Loop Road Route is the longest drive, there’s no other way to see more of the park than by this route. This giant loop will take you around a huge portion of Yellowstone National Park and past most of Yellowstone’s larger sight-seeing attractions, including Old Faithful.

The route from Jackson Hole To Yellowstone will take you by the majestic Teton range, beautiful alpine lakes, and afford you the opportunity to spot wildlife (elk, moose, bears & more), so take it slow and be sure to make some pitstops!
